Alcohol is a beverage made by fermenting or distilling grains and fruit.
Alcohol comes in three basic forms: beer, wine, and distilled spirits or "hard
liquor."
Many people don’t think of alcohol as a drug, but it is. Alcohol depresses the central
nervous system, slowing down messages to and from the brain. Alcohol affects your reactions, coordination and
your mind.
What kinds of alcohol are there?
There are two kinds of alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is the kind present in beer, wine, spirits
(hard liquor like rum, whiskey, etc.), and liqueurs. This alcohol is called beverage alcohol.
Methyl alcohol is completely different and is found in solvents, paint removers,
antifreeze and other household and industrial products. Methyl alcohol is a poison and should never be drunk.
What’s the difference between hard liquor, beer and wine?
Beer, hard liquor and wine all contain different amounts or concentrations of alcohol.
What is a standard drink?
A glass of wine, a bottle of regular beer and a standard "shot" (1.5 ounces)
of hard liquor all have the same amount of alcohol, and act the same in your body.
