  Positive Problem Solving

Some problems seem too big to solve until you really look at them. Try this worksheet next time you face a problem. You might be surprised at how well it works!
  1. Identify the problem (be specific). Be like a news reporter, and ask yourself the five "W’s" – What is the problem, Who is involved, When is it happening (right now? next week?), Where is it happening, and Why is it happening?) Don’t worry if you can’t answer all of these questions, but try your best. It helps to make the problem crystal clear in your mind.
  2. Be creative and list possible solutions. Talk it over with a friend or an adult to get even more ideas. Don’t be afraid to put down ideas that seem silly or way out there – sometimes they can get you thinking about things that aren’t so silly!
  3. Circle the solutions that sound the best to you. A good friend or an adult might be able to help you out here, too.
  4. Write down the three best options, and why you chose them.

  5. Look over steps 1 through 4 again and decide which option you’re going to try first. Then go and do it.
  6. Evaluate your choice, and try again with another option if things didn’t go as well as you hoped.

What worked well

What didn’t work so well

What I can do differently next time, if anything.

Remember that you never stop having problems. Solving problems successfully takes practice, and with practice, you can only get better!
