New UNHCR staff need to see a realistic, “unglamorous” synopsis of what working for UNHCR means and take note of what kinds of information exist within the organization. They also need to see what kind of posts exist including awareness-raising about the difficult and often strenuous working and living conditions, challenges, and potential dangers.

Learners can access any of the modules in any order. In the “How Does It Feel” module, learners get a brief look at what it means to be a refugee, by living the experience as a young refugee girl. The module’s interactive presentation includes activities that involve the learner and enable him/her to build empathy with refugees.

This programme was produced in both English and French – the two official languages of UNHCR. The music for the programme is from the CD Refugee Voices Building Bridges.

The multimedia programme includes a video produced by UNHCR, which is a poignant look at how easy it can be to become a refugee, and how it can happen to anyone.

The programme includes a number of interactions that are based on the content presented in the course. These interactions are designed to help the learner consolidate the information he/she has just seen. The format of these activities varies, but include selecting elements from a graphic, dragging and dropping elements, answering questions, etc.

Once a learner selects the UNHCR at Work module, learners can access scenarios in geographical areas by clicking on the person/area on an interactive globe menu.

There are 36 different work scenarios for learners to view and interact with. These activities are designed to give learners a feel for the types of work and situations UNHCR staff encounter.
