Basic Security in the Field is mandatory training for all UN staff members who work in the field. This program is designed to run from CD-ROM as well as over UN Agency Intranets. This ensures that learners can access this course whether they are in UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, or at a remote field office in a third-world country, that may or may not have an Internet connection.

The first section of the course provides an introduction to the overall UN security system. In section 2, staff members learn how to protect themselves on the road, at their home, and in field office locations. Health issues and personal protection are taught in section 3.

Each section of the course is followed by a review point and the course is completed with a final test.

The continuing rise of conflict situations, together with conditions of general insecurity and criminal activities, continues to place staff of international organisations at a greater and greater risk. This alarming trend means that increased awareness and focus is required for security planning and training.

This course helps UN staff members understand the basic security concepts and techniques – to help ensure their safety, health, and welfare.

The course includes both English and French versions. Christie Communications has also been contracted to create Arabic and Spanish versions.

On this screen, the learner has an opportunity to find the landmines in the photo.

The programme has a glossary for key terms as well as a full reference section that includes excerpts from Conventions, policies, security plans, and other sources of information.

There are three Review Points in this programme. Each Review Point operates much like a board game. For each correct response, the vehicle will move forward one square. For each incorrect response, the vehicle will move back one square. When the learner reaches the end, they have passed the Review Point.

After learners have completed all the Modules and the Review Points, they take the Final Test to complete the programme. Once they pass the test, they receive a completion certificate, which is one of their mandatory requirements to work in the field.
